How to Get a Free (or Discounted) Massage: Insurance, Prescriptions & Other Ways to Save

Writer's picture: Healing SoulsHealing Souls

We all know the benefits of massage therapy—relaxation, pain relief, and overall well-being. But did you know you might be able to get a massage for free or at a reduced cost? If you qualify, you could get professional therapeutic massage sessions covered through insurance or even your doctor's prescription—eliminating sales tax.

Even if you don’t qualify for those options, Healing Souls Wellness Center offers membership discounts, multi-purchase savings, Soul Points rewards, and special discounts for teachers, first responders, and retirees.

Here’s how you can save money while investing in your health:

1. Get a Doctor’s Prescription to Remove Sales Tax

In Ohio (and many other states), massage therapy is a taxable service—unless prescribed by a doctor.

  • If your physician, chiropractor, or other licensed medical provider writes a prescription for massage therapy, you can present it at Healing Souls Wellness Center, and your massage will be tax-exempt.

  • This means you pay less for your sessions—no extra sales tax added.

If you suffer from chronic pain, stress-related tension, post-injury discomfort, or other medical conditions, ask your doctor if massage therapy could be prescribed as part of your treatment.

2. Insurance Coverage for Massage Therapy

Some insurance companies recognize the medical benefits of massage therapy and offer coverage for sessions. While not all providers include massage, here are a few that do:

  • Summa Homelink: If you are referred through Summa’s Homelink program, you may be eligible for massage therapy as part of your treatment plan.

  • Optum Health for Veterans (VA): Veterans may be able to receive massage therapy covered through Optum Health for Veterans, depending on their benefits.

How to check if you qualify:

  • Call your insurance provider and ask if massage therapy is a covered service.

  • Request the necessary paperwork for pre-authorization or reimbursement.

  • If approved, book your session at Healing Souls Wellness Center!

3. Talk to Your Health Insurance Provider

Even if your insurance doesn’t directly cover massage therapy, some health insurance plans will reimburse you for the cost of your massage when you provide a doctor’s prescription.

Here’s how to check:

  1. Contact your insurance provider and ask if they reimburse for therapeutic massage with a doctor’s prescription.

  2. If approved, pay for your massage upfront and submit the receipt and prescription to your insurance company for reimbursement.

  3. Get money back on something that already benefits your health!

It’s always worth checking with your insurance provider—some will partially or fully reimburse the cost of your massage.

4. Use Your HSA & FSA Accounts

Even if your insurance doesn’t directly cover massage, many Health Savings Accounts (HSA) and Flexible Spending Accounts (FSA) allow you to use pre-tax dollars for medically necessary massages.

  • You may need a doctor’s note stating that massage therapy is a necessary treatment for your condition.

  • Once approved, you can use your HSA/FSA card just like a credit card to pay for your sessions.
